The Registered Nurses in Hemodialysis are proud of their nurse-driven anemia management protocol in dialysis. Ninety-five percent of our patients are anemic as a result of their renal failure, and require erythropoietin therapy. We developed our own nurse-driven Epogen dosing protocol, with both physician and nursing input. We check each patient’s hemoglobin weekly, and make individualized Epogen dosing adjustments every two weeks, based on each patient’s lab values.

We received the Amgen Patient Care Award for Excellence in Anemia Management, a regional award from Amgen, Inc., for the success of our nurse-driven protocol.

Registered Nurses in Hemodialysis are responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care to patients.
