JOB SUMMARY:

The Cytology/FISH processing technologist is responsible to perform cytology processing techniques for non-gyn, fine Needle aspirations and gyn specimens and Fluorescent insitu hybridization processing of surgical and cytology specimens. The results of these tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

Technologists understand the theory behind cytology laboratory methods and operate cytology instrumentation used to obtain test results. In addition, this individual performs instrument maintenance, calibrations, quality control and test procedures, troubleshooting and refers questionable or unusual cases to the Lead Cytotechnologist or Pathologist. In conjunction with the Lead Cytotechnologist or Manager, this role will manage day to day operations of the FISH processing, all aspects of the

technical processing workflow from receiving FISH orders to QA. The Technologist also ensures compliance with all regulatory, safety and accrediting agency requirements and maintains continuing education requirements as defined by laboratory policy and certification agency requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Science required.

Within one year of employment complete the ASCT course “Cytopreparation Laboratory” and Technical Competence in Paraffin based Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

ASCP certification preferred.
